Probe into Cashew Corp. irregularities

Douglas Devananda, Minister of Agricultural Marketing Development and Hindu Affairs and Minister Assisting Education and vocational Training, has instructed his Ministry secretary to probe into all irregularities and frauds which had taken place in the Cashew Corporation in the past and submit a report to him.

The Minister has also requested his officials to conduct a clean and formal inquiry by appointing a high official outside the Ministry to Function on the Inquiry Officer.

Minister Devananda decided to look into the irregularities in the Corporation following a discussion he has had with the Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya representatives of the Sri Lanka Cashew Corporation, on Thursday.

Having listened carefully to the trade union officials, the Minister said that he would not allow any irregularities/frauds to take place in future in the Corporation and added that he would never condone any lapses and irregularities.

He said that he appreciated the policy of elimination of frauds and irregularities launched by the President and added that it was his responsibility to see that the expectations of the President were duly fulfilled.

He also requested from all the employees to extend their co-operation to him as well as to Mr. M. Gunasekaram, the former MP, who had been appointed by the Minister as the Chairman of the Corporation.

He said that action would be taken to solve service problems faced by the employees in the Corporation and added that a proper environment would be created in the Corporation for the employees to perform satisfactory services. The Minister therefore requested the employees to perform their duties without any fears.

Finally, the Minister said that since cashew cultivation brought foreign exchange into the country and also because cashew was a product suitable for the consumption of the ordinary people, he had several new plans for development of this product.

He said that action would be taken to open special farms for cultivation of cashew in Batticaloa, Mankeni, Mannar, Kondachchi, Tihiriyaya of Trincomalee, Ampara, Thirukkovil and Kurunegala.
