Ranjit F. Fonseka - General Manager CEB

Mr Ranjit F. Fonseka formerly Additional General Manager (Transmission) has assumed duties as the General Manager, Ceylon Electricity Board from May 10.

Mr. Fonseka has 35 years of service in the CEB and has worked in many departments of the CEB which includes in remote areas. He is a B.Sc Electrical Engineering Graduate from the Peradeniya University.

Central & South Asia - Area President

Mrs. Ranee Herath of the Lanka Mahila Samiti of Sri Lanka was elected Area President for Central and South Asia of the Associated Country Women of the World at the 24th Triennial Conference held at Hobart, Tasmania, Australia recently, for a period of 3 years.

Mrs. Ranee Herath was a student of St. Bridget's Convent, Colombo, and has been associated with voluntary work for the past twenty (20) years, both in the public and private sector, having served as Chairman, Police Families Welfare Association, Executive Committee Member of the Family Planning Association, Committee Member of the National Council for Elders and Treasurer, Vice President and President of the Lanka Mahila Samiti.

SL businessman honoured

Sri Lankan Agricultural Engineer and a businessman S.P.C. Kumarasinghe has been honoured by Her Majesty Beatrix, the Queen of the Kingdom of The Netherlands, with the royal honour attached to the order of Orange Nassau as the "Knight of Orange Nassau," for his many years of committed work to promote the bilateral co-operation between The Netherlands and Sri Lanka, specially in the fields of education, culture and development co-operation.

Kumarasinghe is responsible for the ever increasing success of The Netherlands Management Co-operation Programme (NMCP) since 1996, through which Dutch expertise is provided to the Sri Lanka Industrial sector free of charge.

He is the representative for NMCP in Sri Lanka.

Fathima Vocational Centre provides shelter for orphans and displaced

The All Ceylon Muslim Womens Association which celebrated its 50th anniversary recently is now engaged in major projects related to social, educational and spiritual development of the Muslim women, side by side rendering possible help to the poor and needy.

Having laid the foundation for the Muslim women to participate in community activities, the Muslim Hospital Association gifted a large valuable land in Colombo 5 (Thimbrigasyaya) and with the assistance of Saudi Islamic Development Bank a four storeyed building was constructed.

This building is named as Fathima Welfare Centre - a centre which will provide shelter for the Orphans displaced and the destitute girls, who came in mainly from the North-East. This centre also provides accommodation for working girls and students attending Universities and Educational Institutions.

The All Ceylon Muslim Women's Association has now entrusted Mrs. A.F. Mohammed, Rtd. Principal of Colombo Fathima Muslim Ladies College, to draw up a scheme of work based on the new reforms in Education in Sri Lanka with an emphasis on Vocational Education.

The Fathima Muslim Girls School at Colombo 5 has a vocational training centre and a hostel too.

The school provides basic education with a comprehensive course in Home Economics, where the students would be trained in the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for the vocational education, giving the students a 'Hand on Experience.'

Regulas J.C. Coonghe passes away in N-York

Regulas J.C. Coonghe, a prominent Social worker in Negombo and father of Rev. Fr. Daniel Coonghe, Director Supuvath Arana Centre, Seeduwa of the Catholic Mission passed away after a brief illness recently in new York while on a holiday.

He was a retired school principal and a private funeral was conducted in New York on May 1.
