Outstation athletes account for 8 of 12 records

The outstation athletes put up splendid performances to establish eight new meet records out of 12 on the penultimate day of the 3-day Junior Athletic Championships conducted by the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka and held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

The meet which attracted over 4,000 young athletes is a selection trial to pick the team for Asian Junior Athletic Championships to be held in Ipoh, Malaysia from June 12 to 15.

Those who established records were : Boys - under-20 Shot Putt - N. Oshan Rajith Perera (Sri Saranankara MV Bingiriya) 15.42 metres. Under-16 Shot Putt - Amila Niroshan Premaratne (Bandaranayake MV, Gampaha) 14.28 metres. Under-23 - 200 metres - Joy Danushka Perera (Track Masters) 21.8 secs. Under-18 - 800 metres - M. Anushka Gayan (Seevali MV, Bandarawela) 2.0001 secs. Under-20 - 800 metres - P. N. B. M. Pushpa Kumara (A. Ratnayake MV, Walala) 1.51.20 secs. Under-14 - 200 metres - Lahiru Happuarachchi (St. Joseph's College Colombo) 24.85 secs.

Gilrs: Under-16 - 200 metres - Kashee Dayawansa (Girls High School Kandy) 26.87 secs. Under-18 long jump - A. D. K. Ishali Chandrasekera (Ferguson School, Ratnapura) 5.77 metres. Under-20 - 800 metres - A. A. Nilanka Sanjeewani (Sri Lak AC) 2.15.99 secs. Under-18 - 800 metres - Kushani Nelum Kularatne (Elapatha MV, Ratnapura) 2.15.06 secs. Under-23 discus throw - J. P. G. Darshani (SL Air Force) 33.30 metres. Under-23 - 200 metres - H. P. S. Buddika (SL Air Force) 25.29 secs.

The meet will be continued today with the 1,000 metres race walking boys and 36 more events will be worked off for all age categories for both boys and girls. The closing ceremony and the prize distribution will be held around 6.00 p.m.

Mohamed Hamza (Vice-President Marketing) Nestle Lanka Ltd will be the chief guest and Sunil Jayaweera, President Athletic Association of Sri Lanka will also grace the occasion.
