CR swamp Havies 43/3

by Lal Gunesekera

CR & FC back-division displayed their attacking prowess as they swept past a pathetic looking Havelocks outfit by 43 points (4 goals, 3 tries) to 3 (1 penalty) after leading 26-0 at half-time in their Caltex 'A' division League Rugby Championship game at Longden Place yesterday.

CR after their defeat at the hands of Police last week, had made one significant change - moving in Asanga Rodrigo as fly-half. He is a good reader of the game for this pivotal berth which brought dividends with the ball being exchanged among the backs in gay abandone with good help from the forwards.

The Havies once again looked a pathetic outfit. Though having got rid of their two Tongan players, they never looked a threat to the 'red shirts'. The forwards except for the third-row were unfit and the less spoken about the backs the better.

CR's left-winger Mushtaq scored first in the 15th minute near the corner flag and Kodagoda made a splendid conversion (CR 7-0). Ten minutes later it was the turn of centre Dilan Abeygunawardene to score and with Kodagoda once again making a fine conversion CR led 14-0. Then Viraj Prasanna, scored a"pushover" try, but Kodagoda missed the conversion (CR 19-0). That was in the 34th minute and in the third minute of extra time, CR, Kenya's Mwanga on the right wing put the finishing touches to another fine three-quarter move and with Kodagoda making no mistake with the conversion, CR, went into lemons leading 26-0.

After the "turn around" Saliya Kumara put over the only penalty for Havelocks in the 12th minute, but three minutes later, CR's Samoan substitute Kirisome Leganaita made a fine break ending with Thalagampola scoring, but Dinuk De S. Wijeratne failed with the conversion (CR 31-3). Ten minutes later, Kirisome again made a sweeping 40 metre break on the left flank, passed to Mwanga who in turn handed over the ball to Mushtaq to score under the posts. Mushtaq converted and CR led 38-3. Just before the final whistle, Mushtaq again touched down near the left corner flag, but substitute Roshan Pieris failed to add the extra points.
