Eighth Charles Robinson hockey tourney on May 30

Eighteen teams have been picked to play in the eighth Charles Robinson Memorial All-Island inter-club seven-a-side hockey tournament organised by Matale Old Thomians Association (Colombo Branch) on May 30 from 8 a.m. onwards at Police Park, Bambalapitiya.

There were 30 teams in all that entered the tournament, but, the tournament committee reluctantly had to prune down the number of teams to 18 and these 18 teams will play in four groups - two groups of five teams each and two groups of four teams each. The first and second in each group will play in the quarter-finals.

Group 'A': Sri Lanka Army, St. Thomas' College, Old Anandians, Colombo Colts, Old Vijayans.

Group 'B': Police Sports Club, Zahira Club, CH and FC, Royal College Hockey Club. 

Group 'C': Park Sports Club, Sri Lanka Navy, Kotalawela Defence Academy, BRC.

Group 'D': Sri Lanka Air Force, CR and FC, Old Uvaits S.C., Wennappuwa S.C., Christ Church College.

The opening matches: 1. Army S.C. vs STC Matale in group 'A' and Air Force vs CR and FC in group 'D' between 8.30 a.m. and 8.50 a.m. The final will be between 5 p.m. and 5.30 p.m.

The winners will receive Rs. 10,000 in cash, a challenge trophy and replica, plus individual awards. The first runner-up will receive cash Rs. 7,500, a challenge trophy, a replica and individual awards. The second runner-up will receive Rs. 5,000 cash; a challenge trophy, a replica and individual awards.

There will also be a trophy for the best player in tournament.
