Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb on June 6

The well-known Hill Climb motor sports event in the south, the Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb is scheduled to be held on Sunday 6th June, 2004 at Eliyakanda (Browns Hill), Matara. This is a well-known national motor sports event, conducted according to international competition rules as far as the resources available in Sri Lanka permit to do so.

The Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS), which is the motor sports authority in Sri Lanka, has decided to include Eliyakanda Hill Climb in SLAS Hill Climb Championship they organise in the year 2004 for the first time in Sri Lanka. Of a number of hill climbs in the country, SLAS has included only five for the championship, including the Eliyakanda Hill Climb.

This motoring event has been acknowledged by the competitors as one of the best and most challenging Hill Climbs of Sri Lanka. Being situated in a picturesque location just by the Southern coastal stretch.

The event starts from the main gate of the District Secretary at Browns Hill, Matara, and terminates at the latter premises, following a picturesque, and challenging route. There were about 100 entries last time and almost all leading drivers and riders participated in the event.

This year there will be four motor cycle events including both standard and modified events and 16 motor car events (including standard, modified, one make, and diesel vehicles). The SMSC is also planning to include formula cars for the first time,

which is likely to attract all the faster men and women in the country and many spectators are expected.

About 70 trophies will be awarded to the winners. The competitors are given two runs. The faster of the two runs by each competitor shall be taken as that competitor's best time for the day.

The competitor in each class, who is the fastest on meet day will be adjudged the winner of his class and, prizes will be a warded to the first three in each class on that basis. In the case of both motor cycles and motor cars, the engines will be running at the start.
