Mobitel to invest in Rs 100m on development

by Hiran H. Senewiratne.

Mobitel (Pvt) Ltd (MPL) fully owned subsidiary of Sri Lanka Telecom will invest on a major infrastructure development programme to the tune of Rs 100 million to drive its mobile business in a big way.

Part of this investment would be used to increase the number of base stations including towers and other infrastructure development to expand the coverage, its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lalith de Silva said.

He said that MPL has set a target to provide more than 400,000 mobile phones before the end of the year.

He said that currently they have a customer base of more than 250,000 with a growth rate of 125 per cent during the last year. The company was able to enjoy a market share of around 21 per cent.

"We are going to roll out the stage two very soon to expedite our business as a part of our strategic plan," de Silva said confidently.

To facilitate this move the company is in the process of increasing the number of base stations in the country, he said.

According to de Silva plans are under way to increase the number of base stations up to 300. At present it has more than 140 stations, CEO said.

The company has already achieved all profitability targets set out last year, which was an excellent period for the company, he said.

However the company also claims to be the technology leader in the mobile industry in the areas including value addition, innovative ideas on roaming and customer care, de Silva added.

MPL has won a special award from Russia for innovative ideas of international roaming facility covering more than 200 countries.

It was the first company to introduce the menu update system for mobile phones in the country, he said.

The company plans to get itself listed in the Colombo Stock Market within the next few years to raise more capital for the company for future expansion programmes, de Silva indicated.
