Show stopper at BMICH

Music never ceases for Dalreen - a name that has made a tremendous impact in the world of show biz. This songstress has the rare distinction of having captivated fans as a child star to the 'Diva' she is today.

To celebrate her success over the years an interesting and unusual concert 'Life of song - Then to Now' a show stopper will be staged by her on Sunday June 27 at the BMICH with a galaxy of stars giving of their best, to wish Dalreen further success in the entertainment scene here in Sri Lanka as well as abroad.

In the words of the song 'Music is her first love' and a quick spool back reveals that she made her debut at the tender age of nine singing songs by Elvis Presley with the catchy rock'n roll rhythms. "When I turned twelve years I was featured on Radio Ceylon - the national radio - along with other professional singers and it was all such an exciting world for me.

Although I was the youngest of the group of singers I was loved and accepted by all. My mother Decima was a star in her own right, singing with her sister Mignonne and they were known as the Kelaart sisters. I spent most of my childhood days adoring my mother's singing and became obsessed with the idea of a singing career - music was certainly an intrinsic part of the family. My two daughter's Debbie a professional and now Thahani are music minded too!" gushes a happy Dalreen, when we caught her rushing around making all the preliminary arrangements.

Some musicians of groups you were associated with are now abroad, is there a prospect of them being with you on that day?

"Actually some of them are unable to come down, but Tony de Silva during my Amazing Grace days has agreed to perform. Fortunately Donald Pieris of the then Orpheus is now in Sri Lanka, so I have no worries! The others are Maxi Rosairo of Spitfires and Fireflies time, Mignonne of Jetliners time, then there's Damien Wikkramatilleke of Rendezvous days, Sunil Perera of Gypsies, incidentally Gypsies will be the backing band at the show. Sohan of X'periments has agreed to perform, Janapriya of Two's Company and Noeline Honter.

There's Antoinette, Mariazelle, Debbie Trevin and the surprise will be my teenage daughter Thahani. I'm really thrilled about that!"

Dalreen's charisma has left many a lasting impression overseas wherever she performed which resulted in numerous repeat performances. A Golden Clef Award winner in the year 1993 when she received the Singer of the Year - Female Award and 'Trio of the Year', Dalreen has performed at Katmandu, the Middle East, Japan, Australia, London, Los Angeles, New York, Minnesota, and tours Dubai, Bahrain, Cyprus, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi frequently. She still continues to jet across to sing her now popular Sinhala songs as well as the Western hits.

"Life of Song - Then to Now" unfolds with a lot of mystery on Sunday June 27 at the BMICH presented by Dalreen Suby in collaboration with D.R. Entertainments.

The concert is appropriately sponsored by Singer with the print media being the Sunday Observer, Daily News and Sarasaviya. Don't be left out in the cold - rush for your tickets! Proceeds will be donated to Prithiputa Infant Homes. It's going to be a never-to-be forgotten concert!
