J'pura undergrad knifed to death

by Ranga Jayasuriya

A Jayawardenepura University undergraduate was stabbed to death yesterday afternoon at the entrance to the university, unfolding another chapter in university violence.

Third year Management Faculty student Sampath Bandara succumbed to his injuries after admission to the Kalubowila Hospital.

Doctors said the cause of the death was due to internal injuries. Convenor of the Inter University Students Federation, Duminda Nagamuwa accused the members of the rival student union, the Sampath Padanama of the murder.

"Sampath had been under threat from the activists of the Sampath Padanama supported by some UNP politicians. Last week, he lodged a complaint at the Gangodawila police post saying his life was under threat from these people," Nagamuwa said.

A Sampath Padanama activist contacted by the Sunday Observer said the victim was "accidentally was knifed in a brawl".

Police admitted that Sampath did lodge a complaint under the number of CIB 35801.

Mirihana Police said no arrests have yet been made adding that investigations are continuing.
