Army beat Kandy 20/19 in thrilling game

by Ranjan Anandappa

Army provided the shock of the season when they recorded a pulsating 20 points (Two goals, two penalties) to 19 (Two goals, one try) win over the high riding Kandy Sports Club in their 'Caltex' League rugger match at the Army grounds, Galle Face yesterday.

The soldiers led 10-7 at the breather.

Army forwards and the back division teamed up to a lethal combination and played as one unit as Kandy were made to taste defeat for the first time this season.

It was Kandy's worse match for the season as they were completely rattled by a superior outfit as the Army applied the pressure and Kandy wilted under it.

Army opened scoring through Kapila Knowton who broke off from a maul and dummied to score under the post. Shan Pradeep gave the extra points.

Pradeep fired over another penalty as Army forged ahead with a 10-0 lead.

For Kandy winger Chamara Vithanage reduced the deficit scoring under the post and Danushka Pushpakumara made the conversion.

Soon after the 'breather', Kandy took the lead with their Fijian winger Titu crossing the line for an unconverted try.

Kandy seemed to have partially comeback to the game but Army struck back when winger Duminda Wickremaratne put them back in the lead with a try which Shan Pradeep scoring the extra points.

For Kandy, Vithanage scored his second try and Nalaka Weerakkody who took the field only in the second half, put over the conversion.

Army led 20-19 at this stage and decisive penalties were awarded for both sides during 'extra time'.

Army's Pradeep failed to kick over one and Weerakkody playing his first match after his wedding, failed to put over a penalty which would have sealed the match in favour of the Kandy team.
