CR crushing 32/5 win over CH

by Lal Gunesekera

Now, not a single team has an unbeaten record. Yesterday, with Army pulling off an upset win over Kandy Sports Club, CR & FC too inflicted a crushing 32 points (2 goals, 3 tries, 1 drop goal) to 5 (1 try) win over CH & FC in their first-round Caltex League Rugby Championship game at Longden Place yesterday. CR led 24-0 at half time.

Now, its going to be a terrific battle for supremacy when Kandy Sports club host CR at Nittawela on June 12, which game may well decide this year's League champions.

CH had been winning six games in-a-row, while the 'Red shirts' had lost to Police surprisingly in their six games. Yesterday's confrontation was billed to be another close finish, but CR, proved otherwise with their back-division setting a cracking pace and combining effectively with their mobile set of forwards.

CH on the other hand never looked "to be in the game" throughout the proceedings, after CR ran into a 17-0 lead within the first 15 minutes. The forwards looked lethargic and even their 'outsides', except for the Fijian centre Jim Bolokoro who came in as a replacement for another Fijian, Kara, towards the latter stages of the first session, who was impressive with his strong runs.

CR's fly-half Asanga Rodrigo made a punt in the third minute with centre Harin Kaluarachchi touching the rolling ball first to score far left. Dinuk Wijeratne failed with the conversion (CR 5-0) nine minutes later, there was yet another sweeping move by CR's outsides ending with full-back Wijeratne forming the overlap to touch down far right, but he again missed the conversion (CR 10-0). Three minutes later came another try for the 'Red shirts'.

This time, flanker Thalagampola smothered an attempted kick by CH's full-back Nalin Dissanayake inside CH "22" to score under the posts. This time Dinuk Wijeratne obliged with the conversion (CR 17-0).

Then, CR, had to wait till just before "lemons" before the Kenyan right winger Dennis Mwanga moving in as a centre touched down under the posts off a ruck inside CH "22" for Wijeratne to have an easy conversion (CR 24-0).

Soon after the "turn around", CR, scored again through a Viraj Prasanna "pushover" try which conversion was kicked astray by Wijeratne (CR 29-0). A lot of replacements were made by both sides and CR's Thalagampola was also sent into "Sin Bin". Then, Asanga Rodrigo, dropped a fine goal for CR to lead 32-0 in the 32nd minute, and three minutes later, CH had a "consolation" try through Bolokoro which went unconverted.
