Sri Lanka sends eleven-member team for Olympics by Leslie Fernando The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOC) has named a eleven-member team (8 athletes, 2 swimmers and one rifle shooter) to represent Sri Lanka at the Olympic Games to be staged from August 13 to 29 in Athens, Greece. The athletes are - Susanthika Jayasinghe (100 metres), Damayanthi Darsha (400 metres), Anuradha Indrajith Cooray (Marathon), Rohan Pradeep Kumara (400 metres), 4x400 metres relay men's 'quartet' composed of Rohitha Pushpakumara, Ranga Wimalawansa, Sugath Tillekeratne, Prasanna Amarasekera. The two swimmers - Conrad Francis (100 metres butterfly stroke), presently training Australia under Australian Olympic Medallist Mark Thompson and Menaka de Silva (50 metres freestyle). The lone rifle shooter will be Pushpamalee Ramanayake. According to a senior official of the NOC, these 11 competitors' names will have to be reconfirmed after a meeting of the NOC to be held shortly. The senior official also said that the overall Sri Lanka team captain for the Olympic Games has not been decided yet. The NOC Executive Committee will meet shortly to pick the team captain. The Chef-de-Mission will be Joseph Kenny, the President of the Sri Lanka Yachting Association. Sunil Jayaweera, the President of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka will be the athletic manager, Lakshman de Alwis and Sunil Gunawardena will be the athletic coaches. The team doctor is Miss Shiranee Pilapitiya and Ms. Priyanthi Fernando will be the lady chaperon. |
