Sri Lanka under-15 to play in Asian Football C'Ships Sri Lanka young soccerites will play alongside players from other nine Asian countries at the inaugural Asian Schools under-15, Football Championships hosted by the Malaysia Football Association from June 28 to July 7 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. M.Z. Farook, the Chairman Technical Committee of the Asian Schools Football Association who is a Senior Vice President of the SLSFA said that this is the first time that an under-15 tournament has been organised. This was decided by the Executive Committee of the Asian Schools FA in China last year. The SLSFA conducted several trials and selected 21 players to the pool. The side will be pruned down to 18 by third week in June and the players will go into residential camp under D. Chandrasiri, a former Sri Lanka goalkeeper who will accompany the team as coach. The ten countries, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, China, Macau and Vietnam will play in two groups. The preliminary round games will be played on a league basis. The winner, runner-up of the respective groups play on a criss-cross basis to find the champions, runners-up and third placed team. The duration of play will be 35-10-35. Farook said that the Football Federation of Sri Lanka will fund the Sri Lanka under-15 side on their Development Programme. This a correct path adopted by the SLSFA and FFSL to groom young players with the future in mind. The SLSFA will meet shortly to pick the manager, assistant manager and the captain. Roshan Ranatunga a grade II referee of the FFSL will 'blow' at the championships. The 21 players in the pool are M.M. Munaz, Duleep Abeysinghe, Dinesh Kumara, Mahesh Chamara, G.J.K. Sanjeeva, Indika Priyankara, Buddhika Bandara, Dilshan Dharmasiri, S. Maduranga, Ruwan Chrisantha, R. Tharindu Rukmal, Tharaka Silva, Chameera Chrisantha, W.A.M. Priyankara, Mohamed Imtiaz, Zain Ismath, Riyal Suhaib, Tharindu Samual, Thushara Thejan, Savan Nimesh, Anushka Jagashan. (L.F.) |
