Ananda beat Vidyartha13-nil in Gopallawa 'first leg' by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr. Ananda College, Colombo took the lead in the William Gopallawa Shield rugby clash when they beat Vidyartha College 13 points (2 tries, 1 penalty) to nil in the first leg played at Nittawela yesterday. At half time there was no scoring. Ananda College clearly held the advantage both in the scrums and line outs despite the wet ground conditions made slippery by intermittent showers. Anandians also handled the wet ball well. But good defence put up by Vidyartha College prevented the Anandians from scoring easily. But the defence put up by them cracked up in the final ten minutes of play and thereby allowing their opponents to romp home victors which will help them to hold a 13-point advantage when these two teams scrum down for the second leg to be played in Colombo next month. With the scores remaining blank, play drifted into the final 10 minutes of the game. Anandians fined their first salvo when fly half Nipuna Vimukthi fired a 35 metre penalty. Ananda then scored their first try 5 minutes from the end when winger Hishan Lakshan found the gap and squeezed over the line. But Vimukthi failed to extra points. Then almost on the stroke of the whistle Anandians scored again through winger Sumith Dahanayake off a second phase move. It was sheer bad luck for Vidyartha who defended stout heartedly but only to crack-up in the closing stages of the game. Chaminda Amadoru refereed. The junior match ended in a scoreless draw. |
