Cmdr Darley Ingleton dies Cmdr. Darley Ingleton is no more. He passed away in Melbourne, Australia last Thursday (June 3) at the age of 84 years. His wife Timmy predeceased him only a few weeks back. Ingleton was a well-known rugby referee who made in debut in the Clifford Cup in 1959 at the Havelocks vs Uva game, though he took to the whistle in the early 1950s. He had the distinction of refereeing at the inaugural Asian Championships at Bangkok, Thailand and at several All-India Championships too. He was a physical fitness fanatic and coached Havelocks though being a member of the CR & FC. He was President of the Referees Society as well as the President of the Rifle Shooting Association and Surf Life Saving Club besides being the Secretary of the Ceylon Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (CO & CGA), which is now known as the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka. Ingleton had also officiated in Boxing, Tennis, Athletics, Swimming, Diving, Water-Polo and Soccer, and even been a cricket umpire as well. He was the manager of Sri Lanka's contingent to the 1960 Rome Olympics and was the country's Breast Stroke champion for a number of years. He joined the Navy in 1941 and retired in 1980. He leaves behind his two children Michael and Gillian. May be Rest in Peace. (L.G.) |
