Letter to Sports Editor :

Aussie PM bowls deadly 'Doosra' to Murali

It is highly inappropriate and irresponsible for Mr. Howard the Australian Prime Minister to call Muralitharan a 'chucker'. It appears that this unsolicited, ill advised statement has something to do with politics. He is playing politics and playing to the gallery, especially when there is an election round the corner. Doing so, he has sadly under estimated Australian public and in particular the sporting fraternity. It is evident that as a sporting nation Australians immensely enjoy and appreciate Murali's entertaining spin bowling.

It's regrettable that few ignorant fans kept harassing Murali on the field, chanting incessantly, 'Chucker', 'Chicker', throwing missiles mixed with racist taunts for good measure. One could imagine the trauma and mental agony Muralitharan must have gone through, in a foreign land. May be Mr. Howard picked up the cue from these irresponsible fans and called Murali a "chucker".

If Mr. Howard is that knowledgeable about Murali's bowling, he should also be aware of the International Cricket Council, and University of Western Australia's ruling on Murali's bowling action. Since then he has broken the world record. The champion is at his peak.

This naturally gifted athlete could do without the controversial "Doosra", and still beat the best in the world with his lethal spin delivery, or any other delivery that comes out of his wide repertoire.

Only Shane Warne is left as the only contender to compete with Murali. Shane Warne has nothing against Murali's bowling action. In fact they have a healthy respect towards each other, as they are both wizards at the spin bowling art.

However, it is unlikely that Shane Warne will break Murali's record, as long as Murali is given, what the Aussies call a 'Fair Go'.
