Arafat calls India's ruling party head Sonia Gandhi NEW DELHI, June 4 (AFP) Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat called India's ruling Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi Friday and congratulated her on the party's victory in last month's elections, official sources said. Arafat talked to Gandhi for five minutes and conveyed his regards. The Congress-party-led coalition has underlined in its manifesto "India's decades-old commitment to the cause of the Palestinian people for a homeland of its own." Foreign Minister Natwar Singh has also said India's "relationship with Israel will not be at the cost of the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people, which we will support." Political analysts expect the ruling coalition to express support for the Palestinians as the Congress party has a large voter base among India's Muslims. At the same time, they say the government is unlikely to damage its ties with Israel. |
