New look for Gampaha Gardens by Chanuka Mannapperuma The Gampaha Botanical Gardens (Heneratgoda Garden) will be given a facelift under a new project to be launched shortly. Under this project, the main entrance to the park will be from the Ja-Ela - Gampaha road with new facilities and novel initiatives aimed at attracting more visitors. At present, the main entrance to the garden is from the Gampaha - Minuwangoda road. Already the authorities have purchased an adjoining land (about seven acres) spending around Rs.7 million to launch the new project. They are planning to create a natural pond using 'Attanagalu Oya' and will introduce a boat service for people to enjoy. Summer huts and stalls will also be built on the newly purchased land which is to be developed into a 'fun' park. Stalls will be utilised to sell flowers, plants, dry flowers and other similar products. "We are expecting to open this day and night service for the convenience of visitors," said an official, adding that it would help to bring in more travellers to the area. They are also planning to upgrade the existing plant sale house which is earning Rs 150,000 profits per year. Plans are also underway to expand the Garden's laboratory and glass house. Authorities intend to set up a Research Institute as well. |
