Rs. 1.7 billion tax amnesty to Prima by Anura Maitipe Prima Ceylon Ltd. had been granted tax amnesty of Rs. 1,700 million by the UNF regime, Finance Ministry sources told the "Sunday Observer". This was despite the monopoly position that company had under the terms of the agreement signed between Prima Ceylon Ltd. and the Sri Lankan government in 1977, the sources added. Under this agreement the country had lost its right to import wheat flour. According to terms and conditions of this agreement, wheat flour could be brought only from Prima Ceylon Ltd. and in turn the government had agreed to import wheat and hand them over to the Company for processing and selling. Under this agreement the company had become a price fixing authority for wheat flour. This was the most corrupt deal, the country had ever entered with a foreign company, the same sources pointed out. When the PA government was in power it took initiatives disregarding protest by Prima Company Ltd. to purchase wheat flour through the CWE and sell them at a reasonable price to the consumer. However with the liquidation of the CWE by the UNF regime once again it has paved the way for Prima Ceylon Ltd. to hold a market monopoly on the sale of wheat flour. Oils and Fats Corporation had also been given to the same company for a paltry sum by the UNP regime in 1982. As a result the market monopoly of poultry food has also passed on to the hands of same company. It has become the price fixing authority not only for wheat flour but also for chicken and eggs too. |
