Bogambara moves to Pallekelle by Jayantha Sri Nissanka The Bogambara prison will be shifted to Pallekele from the city of Kandy. Justice Minister John Seneviratne told the Sunday Observer that a massive plot of land had been acquired in Pallekele sometime ago for this project but no initiative was taken so far to go ahead with the project. "We are trying to obtain foreign assistance to complete this project. I have spoken to the Chinese Ambassador in this regard when he called on me recently",he added. After shifting Bogambara, we will focus our attention to shift the Welikada Prison as well, he noted. Minister said initiatives will be taken to set up more open prison camps in the country as majority of the 25,000 prisoners in Sri Lanka have been convicted for minor offences and some of them are serving sentences for non payment of fines, he added. In addition, steps will be taken to renovate the existing prisons which have been neglected for years, he noted. (JSN) |
