Why nearly 20,000 cases held up by Jayantha Sri Nissanka Nearly 23,000 cases were held up in courts as the Government Analyst Department was unable to issue certificates on matters referred to the department. Minister of Justice John Seneviratne told the Sunday Observer that the Government Analyst Department was faced with a dearth of trained officers in addition to lack of facilities and, as a result, it was unable to speed up issuing of certificates. "The Department is partly responsible for laws delays", he noted. When asked what action he would take to expedite work in the department, the Minister said he would decentralise its work since reports on alcohol and food could be done at provincial level. Some items were sent to the department even from remote areas like Jaffna, Trincomalee and Batticaloa but the issuing of certificates were delayed due to various reasons. However, the Judicial Service Commission would take steps to address laws delays with the co-operation of judges and the staff in a bid to dispose of cases early. |
