Speaker has doubts

Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara appears to be in doubt about the legality of the swearing in of Ven. Akmeemana Dayarathana Thera of the Jathika Hela Urumaya who took oaths last Tuesday, amid a turbulent session of Parliament. The Speaker is to seek legal advice from Attorney General K.C. Kamalasabeysan on the status of the monk who took his oaths in the absence of the mace, highly placed sources in Parliament told the Sunday Observer.

Asked whether Ven. Thera is an MP or not, sources said the Attorney General will clear the doubts. "But the Election Commissioner should also gazette Ven. Dayarathana Thera's name as an MP. Until then he is not an MP even though he had taken oaths", sources said.

Dayarathna Thera arrived to take his oaths despite a restraining order from Court.
