A tale of two seats

by S. Selvakumar

Trouble seems to be brewing over the two nominees from the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress to fill the two vacancies in the National List. The SLMC hierarchy is reported to be split over the decision to appoint Bazeer Zegudawood and M. Nijamudeen while the UNP is keen in appointing former minister A.H.M. Azwer to fill one slot. The thinking in one section of the SLMC is that Zegudawood is a defeated SLMC candidate from the Batticaloa district and this is contrary to party leader Rauf Hakeem's stand during the election campaign that the National List should be expanded through people's representation.

The present, though still dormant crisis started on June 7 when the SLMC named Zegudawood and Nijamudeen and informed the UNP General Secretary Milroy Perera to inform the Elections Commissioner to appoint both, to the vacant slots. However, on getting to know of the two nominees the UNP high command informed the General Secretary to inform the Elections Commissioner that the two names are withdrawn.

SLMC General Secretary Hassan Ali told the Sunday Observer that there is absolutely no problem with the UNP and the SLMC's two nominees would get the nod from the UNP.

He said there is no crisis within the party over the two nominees.

The vacancies occurred following the resignation of I.A. Kudoos and Rohana Pushpakumara and according to reliable UNP insiders the party is keen to get former minister A.H.M. Azwer nominated but in place of whom is the pertinent question.

Zegudawood, a former Deputy Minister to Arumugam Thondaman is a UNP nominee. If Azwer is nominated at the expense of Nijamudeen, then, both slots will go to the UNP.
