LTTE welcomes President's attitude The LTTE yesterday welcomed President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's attitude to discuss the Interim Self Governing Authority (ISGA) proposal. LTTE Spokesman, Daya Master welcoming the President's progressive steps to restart the derailed peace process, said that resumption of peace talks could redress most of the grievances of Sri Lankans and Tamils at large. When asked whether the LTTE was willing to be flexible on the ISGA proposals he said "we can discuss it at the negotiating table once it starts". President Kumaratunga met 21 MPs of the TNA on Thursday night. TNA members expect the talks to commence in August once the Provincial Council elections are over. "The President told us that she is willing to discuss the ISGA proposal without linking the core issues", TNA Parliamentary Group Leader R. Sampanthan told the Sunday Observer. Asked whether the TNA would support the Government at this point, Mavai Senadhirajah said it was too early to comment and it was premature to decide anything at this juncture. When contacted, a Norwegian Embassy official said "there is no specific response from Norway but we expect it soon". Asked whether the Sri Lankan Government has officially requested for facilitation, the official declined to comment. However, the 20 TNA MPs who met President Kumaratunga will meet LTTE Political Wing Leader S.P. Thamilchelvam this week to discuss in detail the issues to be discussed at the negotiating table and to convey what they discussed with the President. Two members of the previous UNF Government, Prof. G.L. Peiris and Milinda Moragoda who led the then peace process, were not available for comment. (JSN) |
