Injured Warne faces Sri Lanka Test k-O LONDON, June 12 (AFP) - Shane Warne's hopes of overtaking Muttiah Muralitharan as the world's leading Test wicket-taker suffered a setback on Friday when the leg-spin wizard broke a hand. The 34-year-old Warne will be out of action for a month after picking up the injury playing for Hampshire in their English County Championship 114-run win over Essex in Chelmsford. He is now likely to miss Australia's two home Tests against Sri Lanka, scheduled for the first two weeks in July in Darwin and Cairns. Warne currently has 517 Test wickets, two behind retired West Indies paceman Courtney Walsh but ten behind Sri Lanka's Muralitharan who took over at the top by reaching 527 wickets during his country's recent whitewash against Zimbabwe. If Warne was ruled out, Stuart MacGill, playing in England with Nottinghamshire, appears his most likely replacement. Warne, the Hampshire captain, was struck on the hand by a delivery from former England Test fast bowler Darren Gough. A spokesman for Cricket Australia said Warne was suffering a lot of pain on his follow through. After the match, X-rays revealed a fracture and Hampshire physiotherapist Pat Farhart, who occasionally works with the Australian team, said Warne would probably miss three to five weeks of cricket. If Warne was to miss Australia's series against Sri Lanka it would be a major blow to his hopes of overtaking Muralitharan as the world record wicket-taker. |
