Binupa and Sanjay play in Singapore Junior

by Lal Gunesekera

Two of Sri Lanka's most promising young golfers, left the island last morning (Saturday) to play in the Singapore Open Junior Golf Championship which starts tomorrow (Monday).

They are Binupa Wijesinghe (son of former shuttle champion Samanthi Hettiaratchi) and Sanjay Wettimuny (son of former Sri Lanka Test cricketer and national selector Sidath Wettimuny.

A spokesman for the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) told the Sunday Observer that this will be a good trial for Wijesinghe who is also down to play at the World Junior Championship in Scotland next month (July) with Kishani Vethanayagam in the under-16 age group.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's silver medallist at the last Asian Games, Anura Rohana, who finished 33rd out of 157 pros on the APGA Tour last year (2003), and Lalith Kumara who won the India, Pakistan and Bangladesh amateur titles, are attending the Indian "Q" School at the moment.

The SLGU say that they are "looking after" both Rohana and Kumara who have to attend this school in a bid to play in the Indian Professional Golf Association (IPGA) Tour, which has 24 tournaments. Rohana is already a 'pro', but kumara, will have to decide only after the "Q" School.
