Jaffna girl Nithyani Rajaratnam in Lankan Junior Squad for Asian C'ships

Twice champions Sri Lanka will make a strong bid to retain the title at the forthcoming Asian Junior Netball Championships hosted by the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka to be played from July 21 to August 1 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

The Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka (ICNFS) has named the final 12 players to represent Sri Lanka and the squad has been approved by the Ministry of Sports, said Ms. Yasmin Dharmaratne, the Secretary of ICNFS.

The players were selected after several trials held during the past three months and the best have been chosen, added Ms. Dharmaratne.

Sri Lanka 1999 champions in New Delhi and 2002 champions in Malaysia, along with Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, India, Maldives, Thailand and Macau will battle-it-out at this year's championships.

Sri Lanka players will go into a residential coaching camp next week and they will train at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in the mornings and evenings under Ms. Padma Gunawardena, the Junior National Head Coach and Ms. Deepthi de Alwis, Assistant Junior National Coach.

The twelve-member pool captained by shooter Geesanthi Jayakoddy includes a netballer from Jaffna - Nithyani Rajaratnam who will be representing the Sri Lanka Netball team after two decades from Jaffna District Netball Association Shani Nisansala will be the vice-captain, Anjalee Lokuliyana, Sanduni Bollegala, Pabasara Gunasekera, Prasila Cook, Chamili Priyani, Sheron Nugera, Erosha Harshani, Nadeesha de Silva, Rasuni Karunaratne. Standbyes Chamila Perera, Dinusha Perera and Vasundera Pathirage. In the tourney teams will play in two groups. The preliminary round games will be on a league basis. The winner and runner-up in respective groups will play on a cris cross basis to find the champion and runner-up.
