Ananda and Hillwood boys and girls champs at Novices swim meet

Ananda College and Hillwood College, Kandy swimmers fared prominently to emerge boys and girls champions respectively while Royal College and Bishop's College divers took the titles at the three-day Novices Swimming and Diving Championships 2004 conducted by NAASU that concluded yesterday at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool.

In swimming for boys, Ananda College carried away the NAASU Challenge Shield with 131 points followed by St. Joseph's College second with 112 points and Trinity College, Kandy third with 110 points.

Hillwood College, Kandy came on top with 114 while last year's champions Mahamaya College, Kandy were runners-up with 93 points and Musaeus College third with 63 points in the events for girls.

Royal College retained the diving title, collecting 115 points, Royal College Union Aquatic Club came second with 15 points and Ananda College third with 10 points. Bishop's College took first place in girls diving with 45 points, SSC and last year's champions St. Bridget's Convent shared the runners-up position with 15 points each while Visakha Vidyalaya came fourth with 10 points.

W. M. M. Perera of Trinity College became the only swimmer to win all three events at the meet. Swimming in the boys under-14, he won the 50 metres freestyle, 50 metres breast stroke and 200 metres individual medley.

The other swimmers to perform well were - Janath Prasanna (Sri Devananda College, Ambalangoda), Rizai Muhajireen (DSSV), Audkhan Nishandeen (Lyceum IS), Sewwandi Uduwawala (Hillwood College, Kandy), Passan Iramusugoda (Ananda), Tharanga Manapperuma (Mahamaya College, Kandy), Hirudhi Mawilmada (Stafford International School) who won two events each. Lochana Kottehewa of Royal College with 134.7 points and Dushiyanthi Cecilia of SSC with 134.15 points became the Group I boys and girls diving champions.

Guy Edson, Technical Director American Swimming Coaches Association was the chief guest. Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, the President, NAASU also graced the occasion at the prize distribution.
