Nugawela Central and Wallala A. Ratnayake MMV 'Big Match' this week

Though we are now into the schools rugby season, but two little known schools namely Nugawela Central and Wallala A. Ratnayake MMV are playing their schools cricket big match during the term. Thus Nugawela Central College and Wallala A. Ratnayake Madya Maha Vidyalaya will play their inaugural 'Big Match' at the Asgiriya Stadium on Thursday and Friday. (June 17 and 18) and will be played for the C. W. W. Kannangara Memorial Shield - in memory of the father of free education in Sri Lanka and a former Minister of Education.

The Chief Guest for the occasion will be the Minister of Finance Dr. Sarath Amunugama. The principals of the two respective institutions A. Premaratne (Wallala A. Ratnayake Madhya Maha Vidyalaya) and D. Hettiarachchi (Nugawela Central College) have taken an immense interest in making this event a success. In fact this match was originally scheduled to be played last term but due to the general elections it had to be postponed.

A point of interest is that these two teams played each other in a tournament match and Nugawela Central College emerged victors.

Nugawela Central College will be led by Charith Madhusanka who is a good bat and a medium pacer who scored over 300 runs and captured 26 wickets. Allrounder Malith Thushara is the vice captain and he scored 200 runs and also captured 38 wickets with his left arm spinners in six matches.

Wallala A. Ratnayake will be led by allrounder Saman Abeyratne who is a deadly medium pacer and a hard hitting bat. Chandana Warusawitharne who is an attractive bat and an off spinner is the vice captain of the side. The teams:

Nugawela Central College: Charith Madusanka (Captain), Malith Thushara (Vice Captain), Siluka Madusanka, Buddhika Thilakaratne, Dinusha Rajaguru, Akila Dilshan, Dinesh Ashan, Ishara Walisundara, D. Kumara, Sanjeewa Attaragama, Prasad Priyalal, Pubudu Jinawansa, Hasitha Lakmal, Chaminda Kumara, Kanishka Ranganath, Dimuthu Prassanna, Aruna Wijesekera.

Wallala A. Ratnayake Madhya Maha Vidyalaya: Saman Abeyratne (Captain), Chandana Warusawitharne (Vice Captain), Sanjeewa Seelaratne, Nalin Gamage, Dharshana Keerthisinghe, Madusanka Ranasinghe, Mahes Jayawickrema, Pathum Wickremanayake, Roshan Wijesekera, Nishantha Jayasundera, Prasad Dharshana, Sanjeewa Ratnayake, Chanaka Tillekeratne, Dushantha Samaratunga, Priyantha Kuruppu, Eranda Weerabahu, Srimal Randeniya.
