DLC plans modern Video Conference units at vital places

Under the World Bank funded joint public and private enterprise, Distance Learning Centre Ltd (DLC), modern Video Conference (VC) units are to be established in every regional capital and free trade zone, of the country shortly .

The objective of this venture is to promote VC technology among local entrepreneurs, professionals and consultants to communicate simultaneously with their respective stakeholders in other countries, DLC Chief Executive Officer Commander Russell Kerkoven said.

Initially, DLC will set up one such unit at the Biyagama free trade zone on an experimental basis and depending on its success will establish such units at other zones as well, he said .

This would not only create a big compression to the time factor but would also eliminate air travel. "With the setting up of these VC units, local entrepreneurs will be able to directly communicate with their principals without going overseas," Commander Kerkoven said.

This concept would benefit, especially the garment manufacturers , to show case their products by using models and catwalks to their respective principals.

Moreover the DLC is in the process of introducing the country's first ever truck mounted mobile VC unit with a direct link with the DLC hub in Colombo, to popularise this technology throughout the country, he said.

DLC is targeting BOI investors, garment manufacturers, businessmen and professionals for this service. It is also planning to franchise the VC concept to other interested parties, CEO said. Kerkoven said that a major telecommunication service provider in the country has pledged to work with the DLC to popularise this concept in a big way.

"We are in a network of 60 countries with a round the clock service," he said.

DLC is one of the World Bank projects has been launched a mega DLC centre in Tokoyo recently, enabling better VC access between Colombo and Japan, he said. The DLC established last year on the initiative of the President Chandrika Bandaranike Kumaranatunga, has been conducting IT courses for all ages, while offering IT and VC technology for both private and public sector institutions. It is the only organisation in the country, which conducts courses in a two way VC session, multimedia print package interactive web communication of face to face tutorials in addition to the global dialogue sessions allowing interaction between participants from many different nations, he said.
