Cabinet decisions

On Wednesday (23) the Cabinet presided by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksha approved two cabinet papers presented by Transport Minister Felix Perera.

Repeal of the Railway Authority

The government has decided to repeal the Railway Authority and bring a fresh act to establish a Railway Department. The new act will facilitate to increase the efficiency of the Railway Department and provide better passenger service. The Railway will expand to start goods transportation again. Petroleum Corporation has already decided to re-start its oil transport through the Railway.

Past UNF government abolished the railway department and established Railway Authority despite opposition from the workers and the people. Cabinet spokesmen Mangala Samaraweera stated that the government has fulfilled another pledge given by the UPFA manifesto.

Rs 90 Million to repair SLTB Buses

Cabinet has decided to allocate Rs.90 million to repair 2900 SLTB buses which are out of service due to break down and lack of spare parts. The money will be provided by the Indian credit line. Most of these buses are Indian buses which have been purchased within the past 6 years. The government aim to increase the state bus fleet and provide a better service. Public transport system has collapsed due to lack of care and in efficient management during the past two years .
