IT for A/L The Ministry of Education has decided to introduce IT as a subject to schools. As the first step General Information Technology (GIT) for A/L students will commence next week with the participation of the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaranatunge. IT education for O/L students will commence from next year. Asian Development Bank and World Bank will provide the necessary financial assistance to purchase the required computers. Lanka signs more joint ventures A Sri Lanka-Singapore joint venture to provide an international sea cargo operation services, involving an investment of Rs 537 million was signed last week. The local collaborator for this BOI (Board of Investment of Sri Lanka) project is S R Gnanam, who entitled his company as: Capital City Holdings (Pvt) Ltd, Colombo 10. The Singapore collaborator has been named as: Mohar Shipping Corporation (Pvt) Ltd, Golden Mile Complex, Singapore, A BOI spokesman said. Another project to provide international sea cargo operational services, was signed last week by sponsor, Cargoserv Shipping Ltd, Colombo 2, involving Rs 120 million, give employment for 22 persons and have an office location at Alfred House Avenue, Colombo 3. A Sri Lanka-Japan joint venture to rebuild locally procured used tires for export, was signed last week. This Rs 29.5 million entity to be located in the Industrial Estate, Dankotuwa, carries an employment capacity of 51 and is expected to export 80 percent of its output, the spokesman said. There are two Japanese collaborators for the project and a local collaborator. Commercial Bank MD to UN Summit Commercial Bank of Ceylon, Managing Director Amitha Gooneratne left to attend the UN initiated Global Compact Leaders Summit to be held on June 24, 2004, at the invitation of Kofi Annan, the Secretary General. This summit promises to be the largest gathering of leaders of business, labour and civil society on the topic of corporate citizenship ever convened, which will seek to bring maximum intellectual leverage and lend leadership to key topics while placing a premium on the development of outcomes including new initiatives and measures to ensure the continued relevance and evolution of the Global Compact. This invitation was extended in recognition of the commitment of the Bank to the 'Global Compact' program, which was initiated by the UN to promote Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) among business entities around the world. Commercial Bank is one of the few pioneering Sri Lankan companies, which subscribed to this program. |
