Pearl - lilting dance vibes

(L-R Backrow) Tony, Randy, Jayantha and Sriyantha (L-R Front row) Drucille, Victorine and Priya.

Enjoying centre stage popularity in the dance band scene is the versatile Pearl led by their keyboardist/singer Jayantha de Silva. Pearl whose regular appearances at the Colombo Hilton lounge totals a ten year run, of entertaining guests on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Their repertoire which is extremely wide is much sought after by music lovers who wish to relax after a hard day's work. The month of June has been an extra busy month, quite hectic Jayantha tells us. The band has not only played for many dances, but also weddings since quite naturally June is the traditional month associated with brides and grooms.

Next week the band starts off its dance band run again for the month of July. At random jayantha tells us they will be the featured band at the Nalanda College dance on July 3, the Singer Lanka Dance on July 16 and at the St. Aloysius College dance to name a few. With pride Jayantha reveals that this year's New Year's Eve dance at the Hilton will be the twelfth year that Pearl has played for this looked forward to festive event.

The band a seven piece outfit comprises well experienced and versatile musicians who could tackle any type of rhythm and song. Besides Jayantha, there's Victorine (Jayantha's wife) on bass, Drucille and Priya - vocals, Tony Ferdinandus - guitar/vocals, Randy de Hoedt - vocals and Sriyantha Jayasinghe - drums. The female glitz vocalists the mainstays, Priya and Drucille tackle the load of the songs in the outfit although Priya's speciality is soft rock, while Drucille enjoys country rock.

Tony handles most of the songs in swing rhythm, and Randy sings the pop ballads. Of course Jayantha's expertise stretches to all rhythms and the members together give Pearl that special throbbing thrust that has made them the popular dance band today. What's more they believe in singing and playing live - no programming for them no Sir! - that's their added plus.
