Firemen quell blaze at Govt. Press by Deepal Warnakulasuriya The fire which broke out at the Government Press in Borella last evening was brought under control by the fire brigade along with Air men and police personnel who rushed to the scene yesterday. According to Government Printer Neville Nanayakkara, the reason for the sudden inferno was not established immediately. However, he said that the fire broke out at the Press soon after the employees signed out around 5.45 pm yesterday. The firemen found that the store of the engineering section of the Press had first caught fire and chemicals which were stored there were in flames along with paper rolls and office furniture. The fire which lasted for more than one hour had destroyed the roof of the entire engineering section causing extensive damage. Nanayakkara who was on the spot with the firemen told the `Sunday Observer' that the ballot papers and various other documents ready for the forthcoming local government polls remained intact and he had taken preventive measures. He also said that no one was injured in the fire and investigations have been launched to establish the cause of the fire. There were more than six fire fighting vehicles in operation. A large number of police, army and airforce personnel were deployed at the scene to strengthen the security around the Press. Deputy Mayor Azath Zali was at the scene to assess the situation. Government Analysts were expected to launch the investigations soon after the fire was brought under control. Colombo South SSP Sirisena Herath and Borella OIC A.Daluwatte were also at the scene with their men. |
