Govt. to expedite Udawalawa development project by Anura Maitipe The government will expedite the on going Udawalawe left bank development project at a cost of Rs 1450 million to provide irrigation facilities for 29,048 hectare of arid lands in Tangalle, Kolonna, Tissamaharama and Wellawaya electorates, Agriculture Ministry sources told the "Sunday Observer". The Udawalawe Left Bank Development project was the largest development project launched in the southern province. The first phase of this project has been completed and it has provided irrigation facilities for 4000 hectares of land. Over 1500 families have been settled in newly irrigated areas, sources added. The second stage is also now in progress and is to be completed in 2005. With the completion of this project it would provide irrigation facilities for another 5,152 hectares of arid lands in Hambantota and Monaragala districts. Over 7,200 families will be settled in newly irrigated lands, sources said. The aim of this project is to provide cultivatable lands for landless families in the area while developing infrastructure facilities such as drinking water, electricity, health care, education and transport to encourage small industries based on local raw material such as fish, dairy and agriculture products, sources pointed out. The project target is to increase paddy production by 22,000 metric tons and fruits production by 45,000 metric tons to meet the food requirement of the country while providing employment opportunities for 45,000 youths in the area. |
