More welfare facilities for pensioners soon by Don Asoka Wijewardena With a view to providing more welfare facilities to pensioners, Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Amarasiri Dodangoda will introduce a new lottery draw on pensioners' behalf. Steps have already been taken to construct a housing scheme also for the pensioners in Kataragama and Anuradhapura. Minister Dodangoda told the "Sunday Observer" although it was earlier decided to remove the pension anomaly with effect from December 31 1996,on a request by the National Pensioners' Association it would now be implemented with retrospective effect from January 1 1997. He said that relevant documentation to this effect would be presented to the Cabinet for approval soon. The Minister said that a plethora of problems over the removal of pension anomaly had arisen on divisional secretariat level and it would be resolved after clarifying with the representatives of the National Pensioners' Association. He said that there was no national pension policy to effectively deal with the anomalies of pensioners and such a policy to deal with the situation would soon be set up.Mr. Dodangoda said that representatives of the NPA had requested him to implement the recommendations of the Senaratne Committee on salary anomalies of pensioners. They had also pointed out to him that pensioners were not in a position to furnish the facts correctly and requested to introduce a new system and prepare their pensions on the basis of the last pay of a pensioner. In response to the requests made by the NPA representatives, the Minister Dodangoda said that he would give due consideration and do everything possible to streamline pension payments and eliminate all anomalies shortly. |
