Lawyers' Benevolent Fund launched For the first time in the history of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, the legal fraternity under the leadership of Ikram Mohamed, P.C., President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, has decided to launch a scheme to help destitute colleagues by means of establishing a "Lawyers' Benevolent Fund". The project is the brain-child of Mrs. Anoma Goonetilleke, Secretary of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka. The finances so raised is by means of President's Counsel making a voluntary contribution of Rs. 10,000 annually and the other members contributing in accordance with their seniority in practice. This project was inaugurated on 19th June, 2004 by the Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, P.C. At the opening ceremony the Chief Justice said that this was one of the noblest schemes undertaken by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka. 'There is a wrong concept among the members of the public that lawyers are wealthy and that they do not need financial assistance whatsoever. It is true that certain lawyers who principally practise in the higher courts and the commercial courts have secured financial security but the majority is not so fortunate. From among them, those who fall ill, find their hard earned savings whither away on medication and ancillary matters". "The scheme envisages payment of sums of money to persons when they are gravely ill and a payment of Rs. 50,000 to the immediate family members of a lawyer who has passed away". The Board of Trustees: Mr. Desmond Fernando, P.C., Mr. T. G. Gooneratne, Mr. Ajantha Atukorala, Mr. Ikram Mohamed, P.C., Mr. Hemantha Warnakulasuriya, Mrs. Anoma Goonetilleke and Mr. Mahinda Lokuge signed the Trust Deed prepared by Mr. Nihal Pieris and launched the scheme with Mr. R. I. Obeysekera, P.C. the first to contribute to the scheme. |
