HSTUA to launch island wide strike

by Shanika Sriyananda

Despite the Health Ministry's written assurance to the health workers to pay their salary anomaly before 31st July, the Health Services Trade Union Alliance (HSTUA) has decided to go on strike and launch a fast unto death, demanding an early solutions for their five major demands including ratification of a salary anomaly.

An islandwide trade union action with the help of Assistant Medical Officers (AMOs), Registered Medical Officers (RMOs), nurses, para medical staffers, drivers, telephone operators and minor staffers will be launched at 7 a.m. on June 29 and will continue till 30. Of the 80,000 HSTUA members, 10 members will join the fast unto death campaign which is schedule to be commenced at 12 noon on June 29.

Saman Rathnapriya, HSTUA Convenor told the 'Sunday Observer' that the Association did not believe in Government's assurance as the authorities had been given nearly four months to rectify the salary anomaly. " The Circular was issued in February and we patiently waited but nothing happened. The Ministry now wants another Committee to look into this matter and that Committee would be given another three months to submit their recommendations", he said adding it was a wastage of time.

He also said that Ministry assured to rectify the salary anomaly of half of the provincial health workers but the Association was demanded a salary ratification of all health workers.

However, the Association requests the President and Prime Minister to intervene to solve the issue early to avoid inconveniences to poor patients.

When contacted a top official of the Health Ministry, he said that the government was needed some time since it involved huge amount of money and needed to get the approval from the Treasury.
