Books by DAP to confront drug abuse

The Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme has reiterated its commitments towards fighting against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, to commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse.

Director, Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme Tay Bian How in his message to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse stated:

In complying with the Colombo Plan objectives, the Drug Advisory Programme (DAP) has been able to identify that one among the many problems faced by countries is the high rate of relapse of recovering drug addicts and research studies have found that recovery from drug addiction can be a long-term process and frequently requires multiple episodes of treatment. Since its inception in 1973, the DAP being the path setter in implementing several treatment and rehabilitation initiatives in the Asia Pacific region has embarked on multiple strategies to prevent relapse by initiating various relapse prevention and aftercare programmes. Among the signature initiatives of the DAP in this regard include:

. Integration of life skills into drug treatment and aftercare programmes

. Development of peer and family support groups

. Mobilisation of faith based organisations and integration of spirituality in drug demand reduction.

. Training of women counsellors in family therapy

. Promotion of minimum standards in managing drug treatment, rehabilitation and aftercare programmes.

. Implementation of recovery symposiums to tackle specific issues relating to the maintenance of the recovery

. Attachment fellowship programmes to institutions of best practices in Asia.
