No JHU support to topple government

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

The combined Opposition in Parliament will not be used to topple the UPFA Government, JHU Leader Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera told the Sunday Observer.

The Ven. monk stressed that the combined Opposition will not be made a tool for ulterior political motives to form a Government led by the UNP.

Instead, he claimed that the combined opposition was formed to strengthen Parliamentary democracy and if any political party in the combined Opposition attempts to use it for political gain, the JHU would immediately withdraw from such an Opposition.

The JHU leader opined that the JHU did not have political interests but was committed to up hold and safeguard national interest of all citizens.

Speaking further Ven. Medhananda lamented that a combined Opposition was forced to be formed due to the unruly and unwarranted behaviour of certain Government members.

"We wanted to play a neutral role in the House and we will put this Government on the correct path if it is sincerely committed to a Government of the people", he added.

He advised the Government not to repeat mistakes and errors it had committed in Parliament and added that the JHU would always stand by the Government on all good deeds.

Meanwhile, reports emanating from the JHU indicate a clash between its dissident MP Aparakke Pagnananda and the JHU Secretary Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka.

Ven. Pagnananda Thera has questioned the validity of holding a disciplinary action against him by, former DIG H.M.B.P. Kotakadeniya, a layman.

"Such an inquiry should be held by a senior group of monks", he charged.

In a letter addressed to Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera, Ven. Pagnanada has questioned as to who was the Secretary of the Party. "As far as I know you are the Secretary of the JHU but Sihala Urumaya National Organiser in a letter to the Elections Commissioner has introduced himself as Secretary", Apparakke Thera had queried.

When asked who was the Secretary of the JHU, Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera said that he was the Secretary but declined to elaborate.

Responding to Ven. Pagnananda Thera he said that there was no law in the country that senior monks should be appointed to take disciplinary action against junior monks.

"Ven. Pagnananda Thera should understand that Judges in courts are not monks. They are laymen", he added.

Ven. Apparakke Thera had also accused the JHU of holding a discussion at former Fisheries Minister Mahinda Wijesekara's residence to organise a march from Matara to Colombo. But Ven. Dhammaloka Thera refuted the allegation.
