Four bills to protect Buddhism shortly - Ratnasiri by Pradeep Kumara Dharmaratne The United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Government will introduce four new Bills in Parliament shortly to protect Buddhism. This was revealed by Buddhasasana Minister and Deputy Defence Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake when he paid a courtesy call on the newly elected Mahanayake of Malwatte Chapter the Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Siddhartha Sri Sumangala Thera and received the Mahanayake's blessings in Kandy yesterday. Mr. Wickremanayake said that complying with the Buddhist Commission Report the Government will introduce four Bills concerning unethical religious conversions, registration of Nikkayas, setting up of organisations to settle disputes among religious groups and the Sangha Adhikarana Bill. In addition the Government has already taken initiation to establish the Supreme Sangha Sabha. The Minister added that there were over sixty thousand Dhamma school teachers in the country and the Government will provide them with free uniforms and step up the on going training programme of these teachers under the auspices of the Buddha Sasana Ministry. |
