Govt. alone cannot fund sports, Dialog has shown way for others to follow - Sports Minister Jeevan

"Dialog, GSM has been a prominent sponsor of Sri Lanka sports and my ministry values the continued support extended by them", said Jeevan Kumaranatunga, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports at the press briefing held in connection with the Sri Lanka Contingent to Athens 2004 held at the JAIC Colombo Residencies on Thursday.

The Government alone cannot find all the necessary funds for the development of sports, but assistance should come from private sector too, So, Dialog GSM have shown the way with great assistance and others should follow the example set by Dialog GSM added the Sports Minister. He said that he had been closely associated with Dialog GSM when he was the Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The Sports Minister highly commended Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, the CEO, Dialog GSM who is greatly committed in developing sports in the country. This is the second occasion that Dialog GSM is sponsoring Sri Lanka Olympic Contingent the first being for the Sydney 2000 Olympics said Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya CEO, Dialog GSM.

The Dialog boss said that Dialog GSM is honoured to be associated with Sri Lanka's contingent in its bid for Olympic glory in Athens 2004, his establishment consistently supported the National Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Sports in fielding national contingents at international sporting events. He said that he sincerely appreciated the assistance they have extended to Dialog. "We are proud once again to sponsor national contingent and strongly believes the continued support of this nature will encourage the development of Sri Lanka's sporting talent to world class standards. Dialog GSM has been a prominent sponsor of Sri Lankan sports and is committed to developing talent in Sri Lanka to international standards.

The company is closely associated with school cricket, athletics, Rugby, Football, Disabled Sports, Rowing and Motor Racing and has sponsored national contingents to Olympics as well as international events such as Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Asian Athletic Championships and SAF Games, Dr. Wijayasuriya further added that the company will support Sri Lanka sports in the future too.

Dialog GSM started sponsoring the Sri Lanka contingent to SAF Games in 1995 to India first and has been in the forefront as principal sponsors for several sports to date said Hemasiri Fernando, President, National Olympic Committee. Dialog has become a part of our life, specially in the field of sports. They have given tremendous encouragement to local sportsmen and sportswomen. I had very close contact with Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya during the time I was the Chairman of Telecom." added Hemasiri Fernando.

Mr. Fernando said that the contingent for Athens Olympic will be 9 athletes, 2 swimmers and one woman rifle shooter with 8 officials. (L.F)
