Trinity and Mahamaya swimmers poised to win overall titles

The swimmers from Kandy - Trinity College and Mahamaya College took a step closer in the race for the boys and girls overall titles, taking the lead in the points table on the penultimate day of the 4-day 31st Sri Lanka Schools Swimming and Diving Championships at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool yesterday.

In the boys events, Trinity were in front with 242 points followed by Royal, 202 points, St. Joseph's College (200 points) and Ananda College (194 points). Mahamaya College the holders led in the girls events with 384 points, Musaeus College are second with 179 points, Ladies College 145 points and Bishop's 75 points.

It was records galore in swimming and ten swimmers accounted for new meet records with national swimmer from Musaeus College Prabha Madavi Dharmadasa being the really outstanding, establishing three records in the under-13 girls - 4x50 metres individual medley, 2.45.08 secs, 100 metres breaststroke 1.24.76 secs and 100 metres backstroke 1.16.97 secs.

Heshan Unanboowa of Trinity set two new records in the boys under-13 - 200 metres backstroke 2.35.92 secs and 50 metres freestyle - 28.91 secs.

Shehan de Silva of Trinity also established two records in the boys under-9 - 200 metres individual medley 1.24.76 secs and 100 metres freestyle 1.19.95 secs.

Shenuka Gunaratne of Royal boys under-9 - 100 metres breaststroke 1.43.61 secs. Ali Ispahani of Royal in the boys under-9 - 50 metres freestyle 36.98 secs, Devinka Gunathilaka of Bishop's College in the girls under-13 - 50 metres freestyle - 31.21 secs and 100 metres freestyle 1.07.55 secs.

Miniruwani Samarakoon of Gateway IS Kandy, girls under-13 - 100 metres freestyle 1.12.37 secs, Naveen Karunaratne of AIS in the boys under-19 - 50 metres freestyle 26.41 secs and Chathuri Abeykoon of Ladies College in the girls under-15 - 100 metres freestyle 1.05.64 secs.

Chanuka Wickremasinghe of Trinity in the boys under-15 - 50 metres freestyle 27.55 secs.

Trinity College swimmers also did well to win all their events with better timings.

Chetiya Wijeratne, the Trinity College star won a good double in the boys under-15 - 100 and 200 metres backstroke while Migara Hullangamuwa, Prajeeth Wanigasekera, Dilina Dissanayake and Lashan Senaratne performed well to win their respective events. All individual events in all age groups for both boys and girls were concluded yesterday and today the medley and freestyle relays will be held from 8.00 a.m. onwards and it is likely Trinity and Mahamaya College, Kandy will go flat out to maintain the lead and win both boys and girls overall championship titles. But Royal and St. Joseph's College swimmers are bound to offer stiff opposition to Trinity swimmers.

Diving champions

Royal College retained the diving title collecting 137 points and Asian International School were placed second with 59 points and St. Joseph's College third with 24 points.

Bishop's College took the girls diving title, securing 59 points, Visakha Vidyalaya were second with 30 points and St. Bridget's Convent in third place with 26 points.

The prize distribution will take place around 4.00 p.m. Warden S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia Dr. David Ponniah will be the chief guest.
