Tri-nation South Asian Yachting July 2 to 4

The tenth tri-nation South Asian Yachting Regatta is scheduled to be held at the Ceylon Motor Yacht Club on Bolgoda Lake, July 2 to 4. The regatta involves teams from Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan vying for the SAYR Trophy, which was sailed for the first time in Trincomalee in 1970.

The competition involves a series of short races between the teams, each sailing three international Enterprise Class dinghies. Six identical Enterprise dinghies have been provided for the purpose by the Sri Lanka Navy Sailing Club, whose members play a prominent role in the Sri Lanka team, led by former Asian Games bronze medal crew, W. P. K. Janaka. The Indian and Pakistani teams too, include Asian Games and Olympic sailors.

For the first time this year, Optimist Class single-handed youth boats too, will participate in a series of separate team races for the SAYR Junior Trophy. Here, the participants will be children aged 9-15. The Optimist Class is now the most widely sailed class of boats in the world. It is noteworthy that at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, more than 50% of the sailing medals went to sailors who had begun their careers in the Optimist Class.

While the SAYR team-races, and another event for the Lewis Brown Trophy will take place on 1-3 July, on 1 July, there will be an open event for all classes of boats, sailing for the Lewis Brown Trophy. This will be a gala event that is expected to see the largest aggregation of sailing boats on the water in Sri Lanka in recent years.

The SAYR, which has been won by Sri Lanka in well over half the occasions on which it has been sailed, promises some exciting sailing. and a large turnout of spectators is expected at Bolgoda to view the event.

Previous participants in Sri Lanka's winning teams have included Ray Wijewardene, Lalin Jirasinha, Nihal Jinasena and Romesh Illangakoon, the first two of whom are Asian Games silver and bronze medallists, respectively.

The original challenge trophy for team event was donated by Sir Thomas Lipton and individual trophy by Lewis Brown & Co.
