SAARC Carrom Championships next month in New Delhi

Slicers from Sri Lanka, India, Bangaladesh, Maldives and Nepal will compete at the 8th SAARC Carrom Championships to be staged from 31 July to August 2 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, India.

M. Zahir Naseer, the President of the Asian Carrom Confederation and also the President of the National Olympic Committee of Maldives who was here as a delegate for 33rd Executive Committee Meeting of the South Asian Olympic Council held at the Galle Face Hotel on June 19 said that All-India Carrom Federation have made all preparations to hold the SAARC Carrom Championships. The slicers both men and women will participate. S.K. Sharma, Secretary, All-India Carrom Federation has been successful in getting the Nepalese to play in this championships for the first time.

India has been dominating in the SAARC Carrom Championships from the begining and are likely to retain both the men's and women's overall championships said Naseer. But Sri Lanka carromites who has been placed second to India will make every bid to win the championships for the first time.

A country is entitled to field six players (3 men and 3 women) and an official. The events to be worked off are men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, mixed doubles, men's team championships and women's team championships.

The overall champions will receive the R. Premadasa Challenge Trophy, which is now in the custody of the International Carrom Federation.

World Carrom Championships

The Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka will host the World Carrom Championships to be held in October this year.

The CFSL is making every effort to obtain maximum financial grant from the Ministry of Sports and the balance from wellwishers and sponsors.
