Ode to Murali

He hails from Kandy.
And sure is dandy.
He has bamboozled many a batsman.
Spinning his art like a craftsman.

Just a few steps and those wide open eyes.
With every ball to get a wicket he tries.
Spinning his web is his art.
His `off-breaks' and `doosra' no batsman can `cart'.

He can turn the ball on any pitch.
And gets his wicket without a hitch.
He is the world champion spinner.
And for Sri Lanka will always be a winner.

His fielding and catching is outstanding too.
As if his hands are made of glue.
With the bat, he is no `mouse'.
Some mighty blows, and the crowd he will rouse.

Many a fast bowler he has torn apart.
And from the bowling attack made them depart.
For all Sri Lankans he has brought great pride.
Though to cut short his career many have tried.

May he go from strength to strength.
With his cricket career going the full length.
A thousand wickets is not beyond his reach.
Such a record will be hard to breach.

Lakshmana Nagendran, 33/3, De Fonseka Place, Colombo 05.
