Governor Central Bank

A prominent business leader Sunil Mendis has been appointed as the new Governor of the Central Bank by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. He succeeds A.S.Jayawardane who completed his six year term and retired on Wednesday (30).

Mendis was the chairman of the Hayleys Group of Companies for 11 years. He has also served as a director of the Bank of Ceylon and its acting Chairman. Mendis is a member of the recently established National Council for economic Development. He was on the boards of EDB, BOI and Presidential Salaries Commission as well as over 100 private companies including foreign companies.

Professionally Sunil Mendis is a member of the Association of Certified and Corporate Accountants (UK). He was the first governor of the Central Bank who came straight from the private sector.

The post was filled by economists, public servants and bankers earlier. Analysts say the appointment will boost the private sector confidence.

Chairman/Director General Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI)

Saliya Wickremasuriya has over 20 years work experience with the world's largest Oilfield Services company, Schlumberger, in a variety of senior management positions.

He was Marketing Manager - West and South Africa Region, in Luanda Angola, Worldwide Product Champion, Intervention Technologies, in Houston Texas, and Recruiting Manager - Middle East in Dubai, UAE.

He also has over 12 years work experience in petroleum exploration on oil rigs worldwide, including China, Pakistan, India, the North Sea & Egypt.

He holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Engineering Physics from Loughborough University, UK. Schlumberger is a Fortune 500 company with over 65,000 employees and a 50% worldwide market share in Petroleum services.

Chairman, National Gem and Jewellery Authority

D. B. Asoka Jayawardena of Ratnapura has been appointed the new Chairman, National Gem and Jewellery Authority by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. He assumed duties on June 08.

An experienced politician and Government Servant Jayawardena was the Mayor of the Ratnapura Municipal Council from 1997 to 1998 and subsequently Provincial Minister of Local Government, Sports, Youth Affairs, Environment and Tourism in Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council from 1999 to 2000 and Chief Minister of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council from 2000 to 2001.

Thereafter he entered National politics and functioned as Member of Parliament for the Ratnapura District from 2002 to 2004. Prior to entering politics Jayawardena had functioned as a Government servant for 31 years from 1963 to 1994 and served in various capacities in many parts of the country.

He was Additional Land Commissioner in Ratnapura from 1963 to 1974, a member of the administrative service attached to the Registrar Generals Department from 1975 to 1984.
