Latin sounds storm the Hut

L-R Mangala, Rasmar, Debbie, Shaman Trevin and Reza.

Out of the ordinary and with the exciting Latin slant to their music Phase 3 has earned the reputation of being one of the most entertaining musical groups on the scene today.

The band could now be heard at the Hut, Mount Lavinia when they perform every third Saturday at this venue, with their captivating repertoire of reggae, latin funk and hip-hop. This six piece band has been enjoying many outings in Colombo and comprises the acknowledged Debbie Arnolda keyboards/vocals who was one of the youngest female artists to venture out on a solo career and swiftly hit the high spots with ease. A whiz on the keyboards, Debbie plays the saxophone as well and thats a plus for her.

Giving the Latin pulse to the music of Phase 3 is percussionist Rasmar Lye, formerly a drummer, has performed in Australia and n ow revels in percussion, playing the congas as well as the snocker, flex a tone, shekeve, vibra slap, cuica, and rain stick, giving thatsplash of spice to the rhythm of the band. Reza Faiz the hard hitting drummer has played dates with guitarist Mangala Weerasekera in the Middle East and Europe. He packs many a punch on the skins and doubles up on bass guitar and keyboards.

Phase 3's lead vocalist/guitarist Trevin Joseph's repertoire is wide and takes in all the contemporary pop and hits of the 70's and 80's although he leans on reggae. He has a style of his own which switches on the high spirits in you.

Shaman Ranveera the 'rasta-maan' plucks a throbbing bass in the band and steps in the role of supporting vocals. Quite versatile he can switch to the keyboards and drums if required. Finally there's Mangala Weerasekera a fine and slick guitarist one time with Aquarius.

With a classical background to his musical knowledge Mangala makes his guitar talk which gives the band the added exotic thrust, that has made them popular today.
