Good reads Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet by Shyama Perera Published by: Sceptre Price: Rs. 515.00 Described as "Sharp, vivid, funny and celebratory," by the Mail on Sunday, "A great story about growing pains, infused with the feed-good spirit of the time" by Options, "An engaging, touch tale, written with the jaunty wit of a survivor" by The Observer and "A beautifully told tale' by Company, 'Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet', is a wonderfully fun filled journey to happy-go-lucky age on the train of nostalgia, with retro soundtracks for company and hopeful humour as a side kick. The Story: London is the 1960s. Four little girls have swallowed the dream that they can be anyone and anything, from Grace Kelly to the sole owner of that morning's gobstopper. Reality is just an irritating backdrop against which they chart their own destinies: sisters under different shades of skin, making transition from girls to women. The author: Shyama Perera, a writer and broadcaster living in North-West London with daughters Nusy and Tushy, has the dubious honour of being the first Sri Lankan child to be born in Moscow. Her mother brought her to England in 1962 in vain pursuit of her father. "Haven't Stopped... is her first novel. The verdict: A must read, not just for retro buffs, but also women looking back at their childhood, men who can't remember what childhood was all about, adolescents so full of angst and want to grow up fast and just about anybody looking for a good read. - HI |
