Apparel fora urge review by Chamitha Kuruppu The Joint Apparel Association Forum and the National Apparel Exporters Association are to call upon the government to hold an emergency meeting with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to review the Multi-Fibre Agreement phase out deadline. This follows a decision taken at a global summit held in Brussels recently with the participation of various textile and clothing associations in 47 countries including Sri Lanka. In an interview with the Sunday Observer Secretary General of the Joint Apparel Association Forum Tuli Cooray, who represented Sri Lanka at the Summit on Fair Trade Textiles and Clothing in Brussels said that they request the government to hold an emergency meeting with the WTO in order to analyse and identify its solutions to the pending crisis associated with the expiration of textile and clothing quotas on Janury 1, 2005. One week after the Summit concluded, Mauritius Cabinet has agreed to call for an emergency meeting of the WTO. They have been able to take quick action. Director General of the Department of Commerce K.J. Weerasinghe on Thursday evening had called JAAF for a special meeting to discuss the matter. However, the discussion was later postponed until next week. The Brussels Summit also expressed support for a three-year extension of textile and apparel quotas, the implementation of automatic safeguard mechanisms to prevent disruptive surges of textile and clothing imports and expedited effective remedies to unfair trading practices employed by certain major suppliers. |
